Which exercise in the Gym is the Ultimate Functional Movement? No it’s not Squats, nor is it Pull –ups or burpees or crunches or the crowd favorite “planks”.
The most effective way to safely lift and move weights, assuming that it’s performed correctly (like any other exercise) is the Deadlift. The reason I call it the Ultimate Functional Movement is because mechanically it’s the best way to move weight. You can relate it with a number of activities in daily life where you have to bend to lift or move weights.
“I have a weak back”, “I feel I will get hurt”, “I will get very sore”, are the usual comments you will hear from people who like to avoid it. Surprisingly these are the very reasons why one needs to do the Deadlift and be good at it. Most back troubles occur because of weak glutes and hamstrings. Deadlifts will help you not only strengthen your glutes and hamstrings, but also plays a significant role in strengthening your spinal erectors, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. The sheer high force experienced during the Deadlift trains the body to maintain a specific position of the spine and maintain stability.
Yes I repeat, when performing a proper Deadlift, which is learnt under qualified supervision.
It’s a total body exercise. No crunches, squats or planks can ever come close to how the Deadlift can help you to train the whole body. Yes you heard it right, it’s better than Squats too. Unlike the Squat, it involves muscles like the Latissimus dorsi and biceps and is much more effective in involving the scapula and the rotator cuff muscles. It’s also safer than the squats because you are not stuck under the weight and if you do get stuck while performing the Deadlift, you can simply just drop the weight. Also you don’t need a spotter to perform the Deadlift.
So guys start doing the Deadlift if you are not already doing it. Get the help of a trained hand to perform the movement correctly and also suggest any modifications if required.
